This module studied the traditions of quilting and rag-rug making in the North Pennines and considered how both had been crafts of thrift and necessity in the past but were now fulfilling new opportunities in the art world. | Elsie Walton demonstrating quilting | The making of quilts and rag-rugs, once common throughout the British Isles, virtually disappeared in the last century from all areas except the north country. In the last few decades there has been a strong revival of these traditional crafts using modern materials and new techniques to produce stunning art forms. | Maureen Morano demonstrating rag rug making |
The module also highlighted the range and variety of craft activities carried out by lone traders and cooperatives which are so important to the tourist economy of the North Pennines today.
