AN INTRODUCTION TO “KNOW YOUR NORTH PENNINES”“Know Your North Pennines” is a knowledge-based training programme based on the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The North Pennines is a wonderful upland landscape area with its own special cultural and social history, important industrial past and significant variety of flora and fauna. “Know Your North Pennines” helps you gain greater understanding and enjoyment of this very special part of Britain.The training programme has been designed by and for people in the North Pennines who have interests in tourism and who deal with the public. Running for a total of ten full days over the next two winters, this programme will give you a range of vital knowledge about the special qualities that make the whole North Pennines area unique.The training sessions will provide in-depth knowledge of a range of North Pennines-wide themes, and will be backed up by a folder of information. As a successful participant you will benefit by being able to use your knowledge to improve the visitor experience and boost your and others’ trade through repeat visits, referrals, and personal recommendations. Candidates who attend a total of 70% of the programme over the two years will be able to use the Know Your North Pennines quality mark in promotion of their business and will gain accreditation at NVQ level 2 equivalent. Crucial to your enjoyment of this course is our commitment to engage specialists who are not only experts in their topics but who can also communicate this knowledge in an energetic, enthusiastic and accessible way. This innovative training programme was designed by Pennine Horizons (an informal body of tourism businesses based in the North Pennines) to raise awareness of this region, its visitor attractions, its heritage and natural history. Pennine Horizons has succeeded in securing grant funding from the North Pennines AONB Sustainable Development Fund to deliver this unique and exciting series of field-based training days. WHAT WE ASK YOU TO DO1 Keep a reflective personal diary of the field visits in which we ask you to critically reflect on your experiences and the tourism related issues you encounter during the visits.
2 Take part in the Know Your North Pennines network through contributing to newsletters & the website, events and extra KYNP sessions as much as you are able.
3 Return evaluation sheets for each day to the coordinator. COURSE TOPICSThe topics for study days will be chosen in the light of past “Know Your North Pennines” programmes and the wishes of the students taking part in the training programme. They will include subjects such as lead mining and geology, hill farming and hay meadows, wildlife of the area, local music and many others.Click here to see Frequently asked questions DATA PROTECTION ACT
Pennine Horizons will need to create and maintain computer and paper records relating to the personal data of its students during the training programme and after its completion. All such data will be held and used in compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998. It may be used to fulfil our obligation to return data to our funders. By applying to enrol on this training programme students consent to the processing of personal data in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
