The 2011 Know Your North Pennines training programme has now ended but the 2012 programme is under preparation.

Know Your North Pennines is seeking new funding streams in order to carry on the ground breaking training scheme originally set up for tourism related businesses. The concept of "Know Your ... own Place" is one which has been taken up in Durham City, Northumberland and Hadrians Wall and it is one which we would recommend to all tourism businesses. The format of the programme is at present under development to match the criteria of a new funding body but in the meantime the original concept is described in these website pages for your information.

Please note that the Know Your North Pennines events page still contains live events.

ALSO

The events run by the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provide a fund of knowledge and are highly recommended.

The concept of the Know Your North Pennines programme was straightforward

  • Do all you can as a business to gain knowledge about all aspects of the area in which you operate.
  • Get to know other people and businesses in the area. Join Networks. "I don't know the answer but I know someone who does"
  • Use this knowledge to provide a better experience for your visitors during their stay and to convince them that The North Pennines has much more to offer on a return visit.  Be an ambassador for the region.

Your visitors, your business and local tourism will all benefit.

Welcome to Know Your North Pennines

What Is Know Your North Pennines?

“Know Your North Pennines” is a ground-breaking training programme for people who live and work in the North Pennines.

The programme celebrates everything that makes the North Pennines special, including the area’s geology, heritage, culture and natural history.

“Know Your North Pennines” is for anyone who works with visitors to the area, whether in hospitality and the service industry, tourist information centres, visitor attractions or as guides.

This innovative training programme was designed by Pennine Horizons, an informal cluster of local businesses, and the University of Sunderland to raise the cultural awareness of this region, its visitor attractions, its heritage and natural history.  It is supported by the Centre of Vocational Excellence at Northumberland College.

KYNP Guest Speaker wins Masterchef

Great Britain Young Chef of the Year, 2010.

A CHEF from Nenthead, Tom Orton (21) who demonstrated his culinary skills to the Know your North Pennine students in March 2010, has been named Great Britain Young Chef of the Year.

In charge of the kitchens at the Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel near Alston, Tom is now off to study in America.

He was one of eight finalists battling for the inaugural title of Masterchef of Great Britain’s Young Chef of the Year at a cook-off at Westminster Kingsway College, London.

The contestants had to prepare a signature starter and main course, one of which had to be a classic dish, from a mystery box of ingredients which were revealed the night before the event.

Tom, who is from Nenthead, cooked pan-fried scallops with lemon sole goujons, asparagus carpaccio with garlic puree and chorizo oil, followed by pan-fried duck breast with celeriac puree and a wild mushroom and tarragon cannelloni with Madeira jus.

As part of his prize, he has won a trip to study at The Culinary Academy which is part of The Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
