This knowledge and the enthusiasm for the area that goes with greater knowledge is a genuine asset for all participating businesses, and for the North Pennines as a whole.Staff will be able to share their knowledge with visitors, creating an excellent impression and giving greater enjoyment to guests.

"When I heard about the “Know Your North Pennines” course it seemed exactly what I needed.   It has given me the opportunity to listen to some amazing people who have a wealth of local knowledge, not just the history but present life too.   I’ve met some fascinating people, both the subject leaders and other participants.   Whilst my new-found knowledge may not be complete and I still can’t always answer all my guests’ questions – I now know someone who can!”  - Pauline Elliott, Ninebanks Youth Hostel.

What Kind of Training?

“Know Your North Pennines” is a training programme run during the winter for tourism operators living and working in the North Pennines.

Each day-long session concentrates on one aspect of the special qualities of the North Pennines, for example lead mining, hay meadows or birds of prey. The sessions are a mixture of talks and outdoor sessions.

Typically a day will consist of talks in the morning, and an afternoon visit to see the subject in the field in the afternoon, each session being led by an expert in the topic.

The sessions are enjoyable and informative, giving participants a rich understanding of the North Pennines, its landscape, heritage and culture. “Know Your North Pennines” is run by Pennine Horizons.

The Know Your North Pennine Programme is funded by 'The Sustainable Development Programme' from the North Pennine AONB and administered by Killhope, the North of England Lead Mining Museum.
